2.2 Writing Forms and Purposes

Cambridge O Level English Language (1123)

2026 📋 Syllabus Objectives

By the end of this subtopic, you should be able to:

  • Understand and use a range of writing skills to create texts for different purposes.
  • Write in four main purposes: descriptive, narrative, argumentative, and persuasive.
  • Produce writing in six key text types: email, letter, report, article, speech, and summary.
  • Match your form, tone, and language to the purpose and audience of your writing.

SECTION 1: What Is "Form" and "Purpose"?

Before anything else, let us understand two very important words you will see throughout this topic.

Form means the shape or type of your writing — for example, a letter looks different from a report. Each form has its own layout, style, and rules.

Purpose means why you are writing — for example, are you trying to convince someone? Tell a story? Describe a place? Your purpose decides the kind of language and tone you use.

Think of it this way:

A chef uses different tools for different dishes. In writing, your form is the dish, and your purpose is what flavour it should have.

SECTION 2: The Four Main Writing Purposes

There are four key purposes you need to master for your O Level exam. Most pieces of writing have a primary (main) purpose, but they can mix two purposes at once.

2.1 Descriptive Writing

What it is: Writing that paints a detailed picture using words. The goal is to make the reader see, hear, smell, feel, or taste what you are describing.

When you use it: Describing a place, a person, an event, or a scene.

Key features:

  • Use of the five senses (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch)
  • Rich vocabulary — choosing specific, vivid words
  • Literary devices like similes (comparisons using like or as) and metaphors (saying one thing is another)
  • Careful use of adjectives (describing words, e.g. "the towering mountain")
  • Slow pace — you take your time to show, not just tell

Example:

Weak: "The beach was nice." Strong: "The beach stretched endlessly, its golden sand warm beneath my feet, while the salty breeze carried the distant cry of seagulls."

Tone: Vivid, sensory, expressive
