What is Communication?

Communication is the process of sending and receiving messages. Successful communication happens when:

  • The sender sends the correct message to the receiver
  • The receiver understands the message
  • The receiver gives a reply to show they understood the message
  • If necessary, the receiver acts on the message

Pakistan has made huge progress in telecommunications. The country has around 1 million broadband users and around 100 million mobile phone subscribers. The growth rate of Pakistan's telecom industry is one of the highest in the world.

Means of Communication

The main ways people communicate in Pakistan today include:

  • Internet/Email – sending messages and information electronically through the web
  • Telephone – making voice calls through landlines
  • Mobile phones – portable phones that allow calls and internet access
  • Fax machines – devices that send copies of documents over phone lines
  • Radio – broadcasting audio programs and information
  • Video Conferencing – holding face-to-face meetings online using cameras and microphones

Importance of Telecommunications in Education

Pakistan has the largest Wimax network in the world. Wimax is a technology that allows wireless internet access over long distances.

How telecommunications help education:

Television lectures for schools:

  • TV lectures are broadcast to children in schools across Pakistan
  • This means students in remote areas can access the same quality teaching as students in big cities

Recording and online access:

  • Lectures can be recorded and put online
  • Students can watch them again and again at their own pace
  • This helps students who need more time to understand difficult topics

Demonstrating complex ideas:

  • Teachers can use videos to show complex models and experiments
  • For example, science experiments that would be too expensive or dangerous for every school can be shown through video

One teacher reaching millions:

  • Instead of needing thousands of teachers, one excellent teacher can record lessons that millions of students can watch
  • This saves money and ensures quality education reaches more people
