There are many types of computer systems in existence. This section summarizes some of the more common types currently available, focusing on desktop computers and mobile computers. Each type has specific characteristics, uses, advantages, and disadvantages that make them suitable for different purposes.


Desktop Computers (PC/Desktop)

🔑 Characteristics

Desktop computers (also called PC or personal computer) are general-purpose computers made up of separate components. The term PC usually refers to computer systems that are IBM compatible, distinguishing them from systems like Macintosh.

Key components of a desktop computer:

  • Separate monitor
  • Keyboard
  • Mouse
  • Processor unit (tower/system unit)

Main characteristics:

  • All components are separate units connected by wires
  • Standardized parts and connections resulting in lower costs
  • Designed to stay in one place (e.g., on a desk)
