2.3 Output devices and their uses

2026 Syllabus Objectives

Output devices: Characteristics, uses, advantages and disadvantages of output devices including: monitors, touch screen (as an output device), multimedia projector, laser printer, inkjet printer, dot matrix printer, plotter, 3D printers, speaker, actuator.

What are Output Devices? 🖥️

Output devices are hardware devices that allow data to be output from a computer. These devices can be categorized based on how they present information:

  • Some devices hold data temporarily (such as monitors displaying information on screen)
  • Other devices produce permanent output in the form of a hard copy (such as printers producing output on paper)
  • A third type of output device is used to control processes in conjunction with sensor input devices (such as actuators)

Key Term: A hard copy is a permanent printed copy of computer output, such as paper from a printer.

Monitors are the primary visual output devices for computers, displaying information in real-time. There are two main types of monitors covered in the syllabus.

CRT Monitors (Cathode Ray Tube)

CRT monitors are the least expensive type of monitor, although they are becoming increasingly rare as TFT monitors are now taking over. They come in various sizes.

How CRT Monitors Work

CRT monitors use an electron gun to fire against a phosphor screen, which creates a picture that is made up of tiny dots. Each dot is coloured red, green or blue – the intensity of each coloured dot makes up the vast range of colours interpreted by the eye.

Uses of CRT Monitors

  • Primary output device for computers
  • Used with light pens for CAD/CAM applications

Advantages of CRT Monitors ✅

  • Higher quality image than TFT monitors
  • Better viewing angle compared to TFT
  • Work with light pens for specialized applications

Disadvantages of CRT Monitors ❌

  • Heavy/weight hazard – difficult to move and pose safety risks
  • Run very hot – generate significant heat during operation
  • Consume more power than modern alternatives
  • Can flicker causing headaches and eye strain
