3.4 — Actions and Character of Prophet Muhammad PBUH

2026 📋 Syllabus Objectives

Candidates should study the actions and character of Prophet Muhammad PBUH.

🌟 Introduction

Prophet Muhammad PBUH is the greatest model of excellent character in the history of all mankind. His life, his actions, and his personal qualities are a practical example for every Muslim to follow. When Hazrat Ayesha RZ was once asked about his conduct and character, she replied with a question: "Haven't you read the Quran?" — meaning that his entire life and personality was a living reflection of the teachings of the Quran.

This shows us that studying the character of Prophet Muhammad PBUH is not just a historical exercise — it is a guide on how to live a life that is pleasing to Allah SWT.

1️⃣ Honesty and Truthfulness

What It Means

Honesty means always telling the truth and never deceiving others. Truthfulness means being sincere in one's words and actions at all times.

How Prophet Muhammad PBUH Demonstrated This Quality

  • From a very young age, the people of Makkah recognised him as an extraordinarily honest and trustworthy person.
  • Because of his outstanding honesty and reliability, the people of Makkah honoured him with two special titles:
    • Al-Sadiq — meaning The Truthful
    • Al-Amin — meaning The Trustworthy
  • Hazrat Khadija RZ first heard of his honest dealings in business. She was so deeply impressed by his truthfulness and reliable character that she eventually sent him a marriage proposal.
  • Even after Prophet Muhammad PBUH publicly declared his prophethood and many of the Makkans became his bitterest enemies, they still could not deny his truthfulness. Figures like Abu Jahl and Abu Sufyan RZ admitted openly that he had never been known to lie.
  • On one occasion, before beginning his public preaching, he climbed Mount Safa and asked the gathered Quraish: "If I told you there was an army behind this mountain ready to attack, would you believe me?" Every single person present replied that yes, they would believe him — because he had never once told a lie. He used this moment to establish the trust needed for people to accept his message.
  • He practiced honesty and truthfulness throughout his entire life, not only in his youth, and he strongly encouraged his followers to do the same.

Hadith on Truthfulness

Reference: Agreed Upon (Bukhari and Muslim)

Hadith: "Truth leads to piety and piety leads to Jannat... Falsehood leads to vice and vice leads to the Fire (Hell)."

Context: Prophet Muhammad PBUH taught that truthfulness is not merely a social value — it is a path that leads a person step by step towards righteousness and ultimately to Paradise. On the other hand, lying is a dangerous habit that leads a person towards sin and eventually towards Hellfire. This Hadith shows that being honest is a spiritual obligation, not just a personal choice.
