7.3 Approaches to Leading the Community

2026 Syllabus Objectives

  1. Candidates should study the approaches of the Rightly Guided Caliphs to leading the community.

The four Rightly Guided Caliphs — Hazrat Abu Bakr RZ, Hazrat Umar RZ, Hazrat Uthman RZ, and Hazrat Ali RZ — each led the Muslim community (Ummah) after the passing of Prophet Muhammad PBUH. Although each one had his own style and personality, they all shared the same goal: to serve Islam, protect the community, and rule with justice and fear of Allah SWT.

1. Hazrat Abu Bakr RZ (632 – 634 A.D / 11 – 13 A.H)

Leadership Style: Calm, Firm, and Decisive

Hazrat Abu Bakr RZ was the closest companion of Prophet Muhammad PBUH and became the first Caliph of Islam. His approach to leadership can be understood through the following key qualities:

a) Composure in Crisis

  • When Prophet Muhammad PBUH passed away, the entire Muslim community was in shock and grief.
  • Many companions, including Hazrat Umar RZ, could not accept the news and spoke emotionally to the crowd.
  • Hazrat Abu Bakr RZ remained calm. He stepped forward and addressed the people with composure and wisdom, reminding them that Prophet Muhammad PBUH was a human being — a mortal — who had fulfilled his mission and returned to Allah SWT.
  • His words immediately settled the community and brought them back to clarity and focus.
  • This showed that a good leader does not panic in times of crisis; instead, he guides others through it.

b) Consultation (Shura)

  • Hazrat Abu Bakr RZ upheld and continued the practice of consulting senior companions before making important decisions, as established by Prophet Muhammad PBUH and commanded in the Quran (3:159, 42:38).
  • He did not act alone; he sought advice and maintained the foundation of collective decision-making in Islamic governance.
  • This tradition of Shura (consultation) would later be expanded greatly by Hazrat Umar RZ.

c) Defending the Unity of the Ummah

  • After the Prophet PBUH passed away, some tribes refused to pay Zakat and others declared false prophets.
  • Hazrat Abu Bakr RZ took a firm stance. He made it clear that there would be no compromise on the fundamentals of Islam — including Zakat — and launched campaigns to restore order and unity.
  • This approach showed that leadership requires both kindness and firmness when the community's integrity is at stake.

d) Putting the Community First

  • Hazrat Abu Bakr RZ was known for his extreme humility. He always reminded people that he was a servant of the Ummah, not a king.
  • He lived simply and never used his position for personal gain.
