6.7 — Major Themes in Set Passages and Similar Texts

2026 Syllabus Objectives

Candidates should study the major themes of the Hadiths as these are contained both in the passages set for special study and in other similar passages.

The Ahadith (sayings and teachings of Prophet Muhammad PBUH) cover a wide range of themes that guide a Muslim's personal, social, and spiritual life. Below, each major theme is explained clearly with its relevant Hadith, key teaching, and practical lesson.

Theme 1 — Sincerity (Ikhlas)

Relevant Hadith: Hadith No. 1 and Hadith No. 20

The Teaching:

Prophet Muhammad PBUH taught that religion is built on sincerity. He explained that sincerity must be shown towards Allah SWT, His Book, His Messenger, the leaders of Muslims, and the common people.

In Hadith No. 20, Prophet Muhammad PBUH further explained that Allah SWT does not look at a person's wealth, appearance, or social status. Instead, Allah SWT looks into the heart and examines the actions done with true intention.

Key Points:

  • Sincerity towards Allah SWT means firmly believing in His Oneness, worshipping only Him, and rejecting all false partners or idols.
  • Sincerity towards the Quran means accepting it as the true word of Allah SWT, living by its guidance, and spreading its message.
  • Sincerity towards Prophet Muhammad PBUH means believing in his Prophethood, loving him, obeying him, and following his Sunnah.
  • Sincerity towards leaders means obeying them as long as they follow the Quran and Sunnah.
  • Sincerity towards common people means genuinely caring about their wellbeing and dignity.
  • The concept of Niyyah (intention) is central — even a small good deed done with a pure heart earns great reward, while a grand act done to show off earns nothing before Allah SWT.

Practical Application: A Muslim must check their intention before every action. If the intention is to please Allah SWT, the act is rewarded. If the intention is to impress others or for personal gain, the act loses its spiritual value.

Theme 2 — Brotherhood and Unity

Relevant Hadith: Hadith No. 2 and Hadith No. 16

The Teaching:

Prophet Muhammad PBUH declared that a believer's faith is not complete until he desires for his fellow Muslim what he desires for himself. In another teaching, he PBUH compared the entire Muslim community (Ummah) to a single human body — when one part of the body is in pain, the whole body responds with distress and discomfort.

Key Points:

  • True brotherhood means equal love, care, and respect for all fellow Muslims, regardless of wealth, race, or social background.
  • Brotherhood removes all forms of social division and inequality between believers.
  • Unity of the Ummah means that the suffering of Muslims anywhere in the world is a concern for all Muslims everywhere.
  • To maintain brotherhood, a Muslim must avoid:
    • Backbiting (talking badly about others behind their backs)
    • Calumny (spreading false accusations)
    • Spying on others
    • Lying
    • Betrayal of trust
  • The bond of brotherhood between the Muhajirin (Muslims who migrated from Makkah) and the Ansar (the Muslims of Madinah who welcomed them) is a shining historical example of this theme in action.

Practical Application: A Muslim should actively support and assist fellow Muslims in times of need, share their resources generously, and never abandon a brother or sister in difficulty.
