8.7 — Jihad: Physical, Mental, and Spiritual Meanings

2026 📋 Syllabus Objectives

Candidates should study Jihad in its range of meanings — physical, mental, and spiritual.

🔷 What Is Jihad?

The word Jihad comes from the Arabic root Jahada, which means to strive or to struggle. In simple terms, Jihad means to put in your absolute best effort — using all your energy, willpower, and resources — to achieve an important goal.

In Islamic understanding, Jihad means striving with full effort to remove every obstacle that stands in the way of Islam and the Truth of Allah SWT.

It is important to understand what Jihad is and what it is not:

  • ✅ Jihad is an effort to spread and protect the truth of Allah SWT.
  • ✅ Jihad aims to give — to offer guidance, protection, and justice.
  • ❌ Jihad is not about forcing Islam on anyone.
  • ❌ Jihad cannot be waged out of personal hatred, bias, or prejudice.
  • ❌ Jihad is not about making Muslims superior over other peoples.

Jihad is a collective duty of the entire Muslim community, not just individuals. Its ultimate goal is to establish the Truth of Allah SWT for all of humanity.

Reference: Surah Al-Baqarah 2:256 Quranic Text: "There is no compulsion in religion." Context: This verse makes it absolutely clear that no one can be forced to accept Islam. Jihad must never be used as a tool to impose faith on others. Faith must come willingly from the heart.

Reference: Hadith Hadith Text: "He is not one of us who fights under some prejudice and he is not one of us who dies for some prejudice." Context: Prophet Muhammad PBUH warned His followers that Jihad must never be carried out for selfish or tribal reasons. Any struggle motivated by prejudice or personal gain has no place in true Jihad.

Reference: Hadith Hadith Text: "A person who died in such a state that he neither fought for the religion, nor even thought of it, died in a degree of disbelief." Context: This Hadith highlights that a Muslim must always carry an awareness of Jihad in their heart. Complete neglect of the responsibility to strive for Allah SWT's cause is a sign of weak faith.
