6.8 — Use of Hadith in Legal Thinking and Its Relationship with the Qur'an, Consensus (Ijma'), and Analogy (Qiyas)

2026 📋 Syllabus Objectives

  • Understand how the Hadith (Sunnah) is used in Islamic legal thinking.
  • Understand the relationship between the Hadith and the Holy Qur'an.
  • Understand the relationship between the Hadith and consensus (Ijma').
  • Understand the relationship between the Hadith and analogy (Qiyas).

1. What is the Hadith (Sunnah)?

  • The Hadith refers to the sayings, actions, and silent approvals of Prophet Muhammad PBUH.
  • The Sunnah broadly means the way of life, practices, and example of Prophet Muhammad PBUH.
  • Together, they form the second most important source of Islamic law, after the Holy Qur'an.
  • Prophet Muhammad PBUH was not just a messenger who delivered Allah SWT's words — He also lived those words and showed Muslims exactly how to follow them.
  • His entire life served as a practical demonstration of the teachings of Islam.

💡 Think of it this way: If the Qur'an is the instruction manual, the Sunnah/Hadith is the live demonstration of how to follow it.

2. The Role of Hadith in Islamic Legal Thinking

Islamic legal thinking means working out the rules and laws that Muslims must follow. The Hadith plays a vital role in this process in the following ways:

a) Explaining the Qur'an

  • The Holy Qur'an gives general principles and broad guidelines for life.
  • It does not always give detailed, step-by-step instructions for every situation.
  • The Hadith fills in these details, making the Qur'anic principles practical and easy to follow.

Example:

  • The Qur'an commands Muslims to perform Salah (prayer) and give Zakat (charity), but does not explain how many units of prayer to perform, or what percentage of wealth should be given as Zakat.
  • The Hadith of Prophet Muhammad PBUH provides all these practical details.
  • Prophet Muhammad PBUH said: "Pray as you see me praying."
  • For Zakat, Prophet Muhammad PBUH gave guidance such as: "No Zakat is payable on property until a year passes over it."

b) Acting as an Independent Source of Law

  • There are many areas of daily life — such as manners of eating, dressing, sleeping, and treating others — where the Qur'an does not give specific rulings.
  • In these cases, the Hadith acts as an independent guide, setting rules and standards for Muslims to follow.

c) Providing Guidance for New Situations

  • As the Muslim community grew and expanded into new lands and cultures, new questions arose that needed answers.
  • Muslims turned to the Hadith when the Qur'an did not provide a direct answer to these new situations.
  • This is why the Hadith rapidly developed as an essential source of Islamic legal thinking.

d) Interpreting the Qur'an (Tafsir)

  • The Hadith is also used as a key tool to interpret and explain the meaning of Qur'anic verses — this is called Tafsir.
  • Prophet Muhammad PBUH's explanations help scholars understand the deeper meaning and correct application of Allah SWT's words.
