8.5 God's Predestination and Decree

2026 Syllabus Objectives

  1. Candidates should study God's predestination and decree, its meaning and significance.

1. Key Definitions

Understanding the correct meaning of the key terms is essential before studying this topic.

  • Qaza (Doom): This is the general Decree of Allah SWT — the universal rule that applies to all of creation. For example, it is the divine law that every human being will die. This is fixed, overarching, and absolute.

  • Qadar (Divine Decree): This is the specific Decree of Allah SWT — the detailed execution of Qaza in individual cases. For example, a particular person dying at a particular place and time. It is the precise working out of Allah SWT's divine plan.

  • Al-Qadar: This is the broader concept that covers everything Allah SWT has decreed for all of creation, based on His perfect and complete knowledge and wisdom. It is the pre-determined course of all things in the universe.

  • Lauh al-Mahfuz (The Preserved Tablet): This is the heavenly record in which Allah SWT has written the destiny of every creature and every event — before the creation of the world itself.

2. Al-Qadar: The Sixth Pillar of Faith

Belief in Al-Qadar is the sixth and final pillar of Iman (Islamic faith). This means a Muslim's faith is incomplete without believing in divine predestination and decree.

When the Angel Jibril AS visited Prophet Muhammad PBUH and asked him to describe Iman, Prophet Muhammad PBUH replied:

"To believe in Allah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, the Last Day, and to believe in divine preordainment, both the good and bad of it."

Reference: Hadith narrated in response to the questioning of Jibril AS

Context: This Hadith makes it clear that belief in divine predestination is not optional. It is a core pillar of faith, placed alongside belief in Allah SWT, the Angels, the Books, the Prophets AS, and the Last Day. No person's Iman is complete without it.

A Muslim must believe with full certainty that everything that happens in this world — whether good or bad, easy or difficult — occurs according to Allah SWT's knowledge, will, and decree.

Allah SWT says in the Quran:

"No calamity befalls on the earth or in yourself but is inscribed in the Book of Decree, before We bring it into existence. Verily, that is easy for Allah. In order that you may not be sad over matters that you fail to get, nor rejoice because of that which has been given to you. And Allah likes not prideful boasters."

Reference: Surah Al-Hadid 57:22–23

Context: This verse teaches Muslims that every difficulty and every blessing has already been written in the Preserved Tablet before it comes to pass. The lesson it gives is balance — a believer should neither despair over a loss nor become arrogant over a blessing. Everything belongs to Allah SWT, and everything unfolds according to His perfect plan.
