The Shahada is the declaration of faith and the first pillar of Islam. It is the most fundamental statement a Muslim can make. It is also known as Kalimah Tayyibah (the pure statement).
The declaration states:
"La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammadur Rasul Allah" (There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.)
In full, the declaration reads:
"I bear witness that there is no God except Allah, who is One, who has no partners, and I bear witness that Muhammad PBUH is His servant and apostle."
Prophet Muhammad PBUH explained that the Shahada is the very first duty of a Muslim, and it forms the basis of all other pillars.
Reference: Hadith, Sahih al-Bukhari Text: "Islam is based on five things: declaring that there is no god but Allah and that Mohammad is the messenger of Allah, the establishment of Salah, the payment of Zakat, the Hajj and Saum in the month of Ramadan."
Context: In this Hadith, Prophet Muhammad PBUH listed the five pillars of Islam. The Shahada is mentioned first, showing that it is the entry point and foundation of a Muslim's entire religious life. All other pillars of Islam stand upon it.
The Shahada is made up of two distinct but connected parts. Both parts must be believed together — one is incomplete without the other.
The first part of the Shahada is: "La ilaha illa Allah" — There is no god but Allah.
This part is a declaration of Tawhid, which means the absolute unity and oneness of Allah SWT.
It is formed by four Arabic words:
What this declaration affirms about Allah SWT:
| Aspect of Unity | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Unity in Existence | Allah SWT alone exists as the one true God (Surah Al-Ikhlas 112:1) |
| Unity in Perfection | He is perfect in every way — He does not sleep, does not grow tired, and is immortal (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255) |
| Unity in Singularity | He has no partners, no parents, and no children (Surah Al-An'am 6:101) |
| Unity in Comparison | Nothing is equal to Him or comparable to Him (Surah Al-Ikhlas 112:4) |
| Unity in Lordship | He alone is the Lord of all creation (Surah Al-Falaq 113:1; Surah An-Nas 114:1) |
| Unity in Worship | He alone deserves to be worshipped (Surah Al-Fatihah 1:5) |
Quranic Support for Tawhid:
Reference: Surah Muhammad 47:19 Text: "So know that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and ask forgiveness for your sins." Context: Allah SWT directly commands the believers to recognize and affirm that He alone deserves worship. This verse is a direct confirmation of the first part of the Shahada.
Reference: Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:28 Text: "And He made it a word lasting among his offspring, that they may turn back (to repent to Allah)." Context: This verse refers to the legacy of Prophet Ibrahim AS, who established the declaration of Tawhid among his descendants as an enduring truth — showing that the Shahada has been a timeless message across all generations.
