When scholars began compiling the Ahadith of Prophet Muhammad PBUH, they did not all use the same method of organising them. Over time, two main styles of collection developed: Musnad and Musannaf. Understanding the difference between these two types is very important for this topic.
The word Musnad means "supported". This refers to the fact that every Hadith in such a collection is traced back — or "supported" — all the way to a Companion of Prophet Muhammad PBUH.
