1. What is Salat?

Salat (also written as Salah) is the second Pillar of Islam. It refers to the five obligatory daily prayers that every adult Muslim must perform. The word "Salat" means prayer and direct connection with Allah SWT.

Salat is not simply a physical routine — it is a spiritual meeting between a believer and Allah SWT. It is one of the most important duties a Muslim has, and Allah SWT has emphasised this in the Quran:

"Verily, the prayer is enjoined on the believers at fixed hours." (Surah An-Nisa 4:103)

Context: This verse makes clear that Salat is not optional — it is an obligation (fard) upon every believer, and it must be performed at its specific, appointed times. This teaches Muslims that discipline and regularity are part of worship.

2. Importance of Salat

Salat holds enormous importance in the life of a Muslim — both spiritually and socially.

Spiritual Importance:

  • It is the most important act of worship after the declaration of faith (Shahadah)
  • It is a direct means of seeking Allah SWT's pleasure, guidance, and help
  • It strengthens the bond between a believer and Allah SWT
  • It turns a person's belief into certainty and conviction
  • It is described by Prophet Muhammad PBUH as "a light", "a proof", and "a coolness for my eyes" — showing how deeply he PBUH loved and valued it
  • Prophet Muhammad PBUH stated that the difference between a believer and disbelief is the abandonment of Salat — this shows just how central Salat is to a Muslim's identity
  • Whenever Prophet Muhammad PBUH faced any difficulty, he would immediately turn to Salat for comfort and guidance
  • Salat acts as sustenance for the soul — it nourishes the inner self just as food nourishes the body
  • It provides peace of mind and emotional stability
  • It protects believers from shameful deeds (Al-Fahsha) and wrongdoing (Al-Munkar)
  • It will be the first deed questioned on the Day of Judgement — making it critically important for every Muslim
  • Allah SWT has promised Paradise to those who offer prayers regularly and sincerely

Social and Community Importance:

  • Salat performed in congregation (Jama'at) builds a sense of brotherhood and unity among Muslims
  • It brings Muslims together — rich and poor, young and old stand side by side in rows before Allah SWT
  • The mosque becomes a community centre where Muslims meet, connect, and support one another
  • Congregational prayer promotes equality — everyone stands in the same rows regardless of status

Personal Development:

  • The postures of Salat — especially Ruku (bowing) and Sujood (prostration) — remind Muslims that they have no power of their own before Allah SWT's will
  • This teaches humility and modesty, and helps believers avoid pride and arrogance
  • Salat aids in self-development and helps Muslims become more disciplined, focused, and spiritually aware
